Eliminate Tooth Imperfections with Porcelain Veneers

Do you have a chip or crack in your tooth, or dental stains that do not respond to teeth whitening? If your answer is yes, covering minor imperfections such as these is possible with porcelain veneers. Veneers are custom, thin shells made of tooth-colored porcelain that bond to the front surface of teeth to improve a smile’s appearance. Veneers can change the size, shape, length, or color of teeth, as well as correct chipped, stained, misaligned, or worn down teeth. Dr. Colin A. Forde uses precise treatment planning to ensure the very best results for his patients. Are you a Candidate for Veneers?

Porcelain veneers can help restore brightness and symmetry to a smile, correcting a wide variety of tooth imperfections, including:

  • Discolored teeth: Often, dental stains do not respond well to teeth whitening. Veneers can help restore the sparkle in your teeth, resulting in a healthier, cleaner looking smile.

  • Misshaped or misaligned teeth: Patients looking to change the size, shape, or length of their teeth, or those suffering from worn down teeth may be good candidates for veneers.

  • Chipped or cracked teeth: Veneers are a good option for repairing a chipped or cracked tooth, without removing too much of the remaining tooth.

While most patients with these issues are considered good candidates for porcelain veneers, a personal consultation with Dr. Forde will help to determine if veneers are the right choice for you.Porcelain veneer being placed on the front of a smiling woman's tooth.

Types of Veneers

Depending on your certain case, Dr. Forde may use traditional or minimal-prep veneers. Traditional veneers are custom-made in our partner lab from porcelain. They are very thin, but they do require the removal of a small amount of the tooth’s surface, usually less than one millimeter. This removal is essential to the correct fit and function of the veneer, and helps to create an appearance that most closely resembles the original tooth.

We also offer minimal-prep veneers, also known as ultra-thin veneers. These veneers are much thinner than traditional veneers, and require less removal of your tooth enamel. In fact, many patients who opt for minimal-prep veneers require little or no anesthesia for the procedure. However, these veneers are not suitable for all cases. During your initial consultation with Dr. Forde, he will review these options with you and recommend a certain type of veneer, or other cosmetic dentistry procedure.

The Process of Placing Veneers

The process of placing a veneer begins with your consultation and oral examination. You will be an active participant in the creation of your new smile by explaining to Dr. Forde what you hope to accomplish. Once it has been determined that veneers are the correct treatment for your smile, we will prepare your tooth by removing a small amount of the surface to make room for the veneer.

Next, we will take impressions of your teeth, which will be used to make a wax mockup of your mouth. Using the mockup, Dr. Forde can give you a preview of what your smile will look like once the veneer has been placed. When you are satisfied with the look, we will send the impression to our partner lab, where your veneer will be fabricated.

In about one to two weeks, your veneer will be complete, and you will return to the office for the final step. During this appointment, we will check to make sure that it fits properly. Dr. Forde will make adjustments as needed, then clean, polish, and etch your tooth in preparation for the veneer. A special dental cement will be applied to the veneer, then the veneer is placed on your tooth. When satisfied with its position, we will use a curing light to activate and harden the cement, bonding your veneer permanently in place.
